Frequently asked questions

Is there a keyboard shortcut to enable/disable Hide My Screen?

The following keyboard shortcuts are available on the native app for macOS:

  • Enable/Disable: CMD + H
  • Darken Overlay: CMD + SHIFT + Arrow Down
  • Lighten Overlay: CMD + SHIFT + Arrow Up

Note: The above shortcuts only work while the app is running (visible in the menubar).

Does Hide My Screen require an internet connection?

Hide My Screen works completely offline (except for installation and updates).

Which versions of macOS are supported?

Hide My Screen is built to run on versions 11.0 or higher.

Why is the screen exposed while transitioning to and from fullscreen in macOS?

This is a result of how the new fullscreen workspace is created and presented. The only workaround at the moment is to:

  • only load the document or content after the transition to fullscreen mode has completed and the overlay is visible again
  • exit the content before exiting fullscreen mode

Why isn't the Firefox extension working?

You probably need to:

  • go into about:addons
  • click on the ... button next to Hide My Screen
  • click Manage
  • click the Permissions tab
  • turn on the option, Access your data for all web pages

You may also need to Allow the options in the details tab for the contexts listed.

Why is the keyhole in the wrong position when I'm typing?

If your browser tries to block fingerprinting, one of the things it will do is lie about the screen dimensions. This confuses trackers but, unfortunately, also hinders Hide My Screen, as it needs this information to correctly position the keyhole when typing.

If you're using Brave, you have a couple of options:

  1. Disable the false screen size per site:

    • Go to the tab where you'd like to disable the feature
    • Click the Brave icon to the right of the omnibar
    • Expand Advanced Controls
    • Change Block fingerprinting to Allow fingerprinting
  2. Disable false screen size reporting globally:

    • In the omnibar, type chrome://flags
    • Search for Block screen fingerprinting
    • Set it to Disabled
    • Restart the browser

Alternatively, you can try setting the offset X and Y values in the browser extension options.

Why does the Hide My Screen extension need to access "data on all pages"?

Hide My Screen's Follow Typing feature works by watching for key strokes. In accordance with our Privacy Policy, the text you type is never actually read and no data is stored. The key strokes are only used to determine where on the page you're typing. This allows the Hide My Screen spotlight — or "keyhole" — to follow along.

What is Hide My Screen (Full)?

Hide My Screen (Full) includes everything in the free App Store version, plus native caret tracking — the cursor follows your typing across apps without needing separate app-specific extensions. It also unlocks greater customisation, the frosted glass overlay, and removes Hide My Screen branding from the overlay. It works across far more native apps including Chrome, Safari, Brave, Xcode, VS Code, Obsidian, and more.

What's the difference between the App Store version and the Full version?

The free App Store version gives you the system-wide privacy overlay, keyboard shortcuts, menubar integration, and adjustable opacity. However, caret tracking requires separate app-specific extensions. The Full version ($19.99) adds native caret tracking built in, greater customisation options, the frosted glass overlay, and removes Hide My Screen branding from the overlay.

How much does Hide My Screen (Full) cost?

Hide My Screen (Full) is a one-time purchase of $19.99. There are no subscriptions, no recurring fees, and future updates are included.

How do I download Hide My Screen (Full) after purchasing?
